Ogden Marathon today.  Overall, satisfied with effort and feel the result portends well for a decent year.

Got up, drove from Riverton to the buses.  Serendipidously met up with MattK at the bus loading site while waiting for one of the later buses.  We sat next together and had a nice time.  Our bus only got lost once, and as the bellwhether bus for our group, two other unsuspecting buses followed.  Fortunately, after coming to a dead end, it was only a few minute detour.  The staging area was nice.  Call it karma, but the woman could not get the tape to hold the VIP sign on the special portapottie.  Anyway, mine actually had hand sanitizer and they did have a little outside soap station.  Nice touch, and as Matt pointed out, especially with the flu.

Got near the front for the start and was able to say hello to a number of friendly bloggers.  I did not want to get stuck behind the relay racers this year as we wanted to run decent tangents.  Any way, ran with MattK through the half in 1:28, then he pulled away from me on the mile between 14 and 15.  Here are my splits:

 1 6:23
 2 6:35 12:58
 3 6:30 19:29
 4 6:34 26:03
 5 6:32 32:05
 6 6:37 39:13
7 6:36 45:49 Even though this was slightly a faster pace than originally planned through here, I felt great.  MattK was awesome to run with.  At this point we were hanging with the women leaders.
 8 6:43 52:32
 9 6:50 59:23
 10 6:49 1:06:13
 11 6:59 1:13:12
 12 6:51 1:20:03
 13 6:58 1:27:02
14 7:01 1:34:04 At this point MattK said, he didn't want to get chicked and left me on the uphill.
15 7:29 1:41:33 I gave up a bit of time here, trying to conserve, Allie leaped me.
16 7:06 1:48:40 Passed Allie, must have been just before her knee gave out.
 17 7:05 1:55:45
 18 6:40 2:02:26
 19 7:23 2:09:49 Very disappointed here.
20 7:22 2:17:12 Perhaps could have pushed more, but I was behind 3:00 pace now.
 21 7:19 2:24:32 Again, losing time.
22 7:03 2:31:36Sasha helped around the water stop here, helping me to take down some Poweraide.  It did help, but still too slow.
 23 7:16 2:38:52
 24 7:58 2:46:50 Decided to jog in.
 25 8:43 2:55:34
 26 8:41 3:04:15
 26.2 (garmin .25)
1:30 3:05:45 Final kick passing 2 guys who had passed me during the last little bit.

So looking back, I was on pace longer than I thought during the race.  Hitting only 7:23 at mile 19 really did me in mentally because I realized holding 7:00 pace would not quite get me sub 3:00.  When I followed in up with a few 7:2xs I realized today was not the day and totally coasted in, except for the last straight away where I decided to kick it in to pass 2 men who had passed me.

Some thoughts:  even in my total hang on mode I was able to hold 7:20x which is a big improvement.  Going in I wasn't quite in sub 3:00 shape but I gave it a go, which cost me a few minutes in the end.  Hey, better to have tried I suppose.

MattK kicked booty, negative splitting the second half and finishing 2:55:x.  I'll take credit for holding him back.  :)

Nice job, Paul. Looks very similar to the way I ran it last year - go out hard and hold on for dear life. I think that you have set yourself up for a good year.

Great job! Giving a sub-3 a try and still hanging in for a 3:05 when not 100% is great.

From maurine on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 16:47:06 from 63.255.172.2

Great job on the marathon. It was sure nice weather compared to some of the warmup races.

From Dee on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 17:21:15 from 65.100.244.159

Good job. I was in line for the port-a-potty watching the lady try to tape the VIP sign. We had a good laugh for what seemed like ten minutes.

Paul --

Sweet race ... awesome effort ... you are wicked fast!!! Glad you found the VIP treatment (you deserve it). Also, had no idea that you are second cousins to John Vuyk!! John and I are great friends and run together often when I'm not injured (so basically, we hardly run together at all :)).

Seriously ... incredible race!! :) :) :)

From RAD on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 21:20:24 from 67.166.99.8

NICE JOB Paul!!! I wish I could've met you this morning. I"m so impressed with your time, I felt happy just to see the front of the crowd for the first 1/2 mile as we were going downhill :)

From Kelli on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 23:29:01 from 71.219.69.233

I agree, I would rather try than not at all. You are almost there, and you will get it very soon.

Good job!

So close....ahhh whatever, close enough right? Good race and you WILL have a good year of racing ahead. See you at TOU for another go at it?

From josse on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 01:28:25 from 70.193.161.130

I am so glad you tried:) I think it is so much better to try and fail than not try at all. Great job.

From montelepsy on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 01:36:36 from 155.85.58.253

Serendipidously? I've never seen anyone use that in a sentence. That's more impressive to me than your blazing marathon time.

From Kathie on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 12:32:20 from 207.155.176.10

Great race Paul. I am with the rest of the crowd you should be proud of your effort. You will get that sub three soon.

From Mike Warren on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 12:44:34 from 208.117.124.133

Paul, very nice race. I think this effort would of gotten you the sub 3 at STG. Keep working hard your right there.

From Lucia on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 14:31:31 from 74.9.147.114

Congratulations, what a great race! Sorry you didn't get your sub-3, but you'll get there very soon, no doubt about it!

From Jon on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 16:04:44 from 75.169.140.132

Hey, nice job, Paul. I remember meeting you before Ogden last year. You beat that time by almost 50 minutes! You'll get your sub-3 sometime!

From mattk on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 11:46:14 from 69.27.13.147

Paul,

Sorry I've taken a while to comment.

Thanks for riding/running with me. It was great to get to know you better. Nice job in the race. I didn't think I was going to feel as good as I did, and apologize if I pushed it a little too hard on some of the earlier miles. Solid time for a early season run! You'll blow your PR away come Oct. (you'll probably do it next month!). Keep jammin' on those 'decline miles' to prep for UV.

From Rhett on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 13:14:32 from 74.41.249.102

Paul,

Nice race. Looks like you had the same job at Ogden that I had in Boston, holding MattK back for the first half. What would he do without us? LOL

Great race. I think this bodes well for a sub 3 race later in the year for you. You are so close.

From JulieC on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 13:28:38 from 65.103.255.113

Great run!!! I am impressed with the speed in a lot of you fast runners and then like me, at times, lose pace the last few miles but still have an awesome time for it. So, is it better to push then fade or pull back and gain (but maybe not as much)? It seems to be a fine balance. The number 2 girl was way ahead for a while. It is hard to get that balance and finish strong. Here's to SGM, may we all find that balance!!!

From Neil on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 13:40:38 from 164.165.24.5

Coasting in for a 3:05 is very impressive. Well done.

Great job Paul. And I am glad you jumped out and said hello at the starting line. I would of never have recognized you.:) And awesome job on the race. Your knocking on that sub 3 yet again.

Pul, any thought on where you could have made up the 5 minutes?
