Utah Valley Marathon.

I love seeing so many friends before and after the race.  Rode up with Dustin E, Mike W, and Wild Bull who talked me into at least seeing if I could hit sub 3.  I figured, what the heck.  Unfortunately, I had nothing for the flats and uphills, oh well.  Start was a bit unorganized, but when it finally got going at least the rain was not a constant downpour.

 1
6:44  Although my training has been limited by my injury, I finally feel like I'm making some progress.  Controlled on the downhills.
 2
6:40 13:24Feeling good, nice gradual downhill.  Horses running along with us in their fields.
 3
6:43 20:07Very nice part of the course.
 4
6:50 26:58Miles are going by comfortably.
 5
6:42 33:40Feeling good.  Breathing is good.
 6
6:45 40:26Last of the nice downhill start.
 7
7:24 47:50Tried to ease back on hills by Deercreek.  I can tell I've not done any real uphill training.
 8
7:25 55:16Didn't like the uphill, slowed too much in hindsight.  Time to do more uphill treadmill running.
 9
6:32 1:01:49Nice to have some downhill again.  Just worked on leg turnover and the pace increased for me nicely.
 10
6:50 1:08:40One of the race highlights was seeing Andy Browning and his kids at the aid station just after mile nine.  Heading in I was shouting, "I need poweraide from a Browning."  One of his darling daughters handed me some as I took it from her on the run.  Andy,  had a Diet Dew ready for me (what a guy) and I actually felt bad that I had to turn him down.  The gesture was awesome.
 11
7:14 1:15:54These rollers were no fun.
 12
6:47 1:22:41Still feeling alright on the rollers, BUT the in the rain my right foot is starting to blister.
 13
 6:57 1:29:39

Again, trying not to press but the flat and uphills are slowing me too much.

Half in 1:30:50 Bummer (mentally I don't think I will be able to negative split to a sub 3 so I sort of give in)

 14
7:08 1:36:47Mentally just wasn't willing to push it on the uphill.
 15
7:20 1:44:08Really starting to feel the blister in the center of my right foot.
 16
6:31 1:50:39Needed the downhill and only tailwind of the whole marathon.
 17
 6:46
 1:57:26Good mile.
 18
7:01 2:04:28Some rolling and headwind.  Not a good time for headwind.
 19
 7:13 2:11:41Blister in hurting.
 20
7:26 2:19:08Shifted to just cruising in.  Satisfied with a good effort given limited time to train, but need more endurance.
 21
7:29 2:26:37Just on auto.  Thinking 8xs would be ok, but glad still in the 7xs.
 22
7:26 2:34:03Effort is not too difficult, which means I'm being a wuss.  Not pressing at all.  I need to work on this.  Blister is constant pain.
 23
7:46 2:41:50Weak sauce, giving up more time.  I think it was this mile the person directing traffic let a bunch of cars and a bus pull right in front of me.  I had to actually turn 90 degrees and run around a bus blocking the lane to get back on course.  Lame.
 24
7:28 2:49:18Just trying to finish, at least I have not stopped.
 25
 8:03 2:57:22Oops, let an 8 creep in.
 26
7:48 3:05:10Very lazy, I know I had enough to push in but didn't.
26.2

2:00 (.29 on my garmin)   (7:15 pace)
3:07:11
 Just glad to finish.

Overall, satisfied that I have made some progress in the limited 7 weeks of running after trying to recover from my achilles.  Never really pushed things, just didn't have the overall fitness (mental and physical) to push things to the next level.   Achilles still is a bit sore, but I'm just learning to deal with it.  I need to learn how to push myself to discomfort, as I take things too easy.

Now, after the race, when I finally looked at my blister it was almost 2 inches in length and sort of pear shaped wider than 1 inch at the widest part, right in the middle of the ball of my foot.

Nasty-ouch.

Shouldnt the highlight of the race have been meeting me in the finish area? Nice to meet you in person finally. Good job on the run. Get that blister healed and start churning out some good training for the next one.

I'd say that is a fantastic performance on such limited running. I am glad to see your mind numbing dedication to water running and elliptical pay off. well done!

From Paul Thomas on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 14:18:40 from 71.213.73.86

It was good to see you before the race. What would it be like to take it easy and run a 3:07 on little training? It's pretty impressive to me. Congratulations.

From Mike Warren on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 14:30:09 from 74.211.5.221

Was nice seeing you again and chating on the bus ride up. Funny, I never saw you after the started and we even finished real close together. I think we should both have a great STG. You ran a real nice race for your limited training and really not the easiest day out there.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 16:08:12 from 174.52.45.85

I can't believe you posted a pic of your blister!!! Yes I can, you are Rivertonpaul!!!! (Seriously, icky.)

Nonetheless ... AWESOME race!!! You really are an amazing runner. How does someone run a 3:07 and place 3rd in their division without racing full out? INCREDIBLE!!!

Nicely done!

A huge congrats!! :)

From Holt on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 17:22:43 from 75.169.90.161

Good Paul - that was a fun little blister for you! Get it taken care of and back on the road.

From Lily on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 19:34:09 from 67.199.181.73

Way to go Paul!!!

From Tom on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 20:36:21 from 67.199.180.90

Very nice job Paul. Looks like your persistence and diligence in keeping up the crosstraining while injured has kept you in tip-top shape.

From JulieC on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 20:51:28 from 71.219.44.53

That blister alone is a mental/physical thorn in the side. They throw off your stride and strip your confidence to hold on strong. ... so I'd say you ran quite well considering. Man I hate blisters!!! Had a similar one at SGM last year. Should have posted it for a contest : D. You should feel great about a speedier performance than Ogden post injury!! I think marathons four weeks apart are difficult especially trying to go under three!! Good job!! Surely that blister took 7 minutes off your time!!

From flatlander on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 20:58:43 from 76.31.26.153

Good job, looks like you are fully recovered and ready to get your mojo back for some even faster runs the rest of the year.

From josse on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 21:41:06 from 75.231.251.33

Ouch that doesn't look fun. Nice solid race and fun to chat with you at the end and cheer you in.

From Kelli on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 23:05:00 from 71.219.93.114

Holy mother of pearl, that is a bad blister!!!! Blame everything on that, including the 8 you let creep in!

Nice job, especially with the injury as of late. That is very impressive all things considered.

Thanks for saying HI, it made me feel cool!

From Dustin on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 23:56:31 from 209.33.243.131

Was nice visiting on the way up, good race for just coming off an injury.

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 02:16:03 from 174.23.236.38

CONGRATS on 3rd AG placement!

That is one nasty blister! How in the world could you be any tougher?!!! I am soooo proud of you! EXCELLENT performance all things considered!

THANKS for picking up my drop bag and using your lawyer skill to procure a nice schwag bag for me! U DA MAN!!!!

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 02:17:51 from 174.23.236.38

BTW!!! I LOVE the blister pic. I had one the same size of yours, about a silver dollar size, on the ball of my left foot closer to the big toe side at SGM last year. OUCH!!!!

From timp on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 10:14:07 from 144.189.100.25

great job out there!

From Doone on Mon, Jun 14, 2010 at 16:36:33 from 184.10.154.170

Wowsers! Big blister!! Sorry about that. You ran a great race. Congrats on the time.

From MarcE on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 01:55:10 from 75.160.164.30

Great race, RP! I think we both need to work on the mental part a little more. :) Congrats on taking home some hardware in a big race! (almost 1400 overall) Enjoy some rest, and bummer about the blister -- I think you did quite well considering the pain that must have caused you. Congrats!

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 10:42:57 from 68.185.76.156

Nice race Paul. You have to be happy with those consistent split times. Hope you're enjoying your recovery. I'm headed out now for my first easy run since Saturday.

From Andy on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 11:55:53 from 159.212.71.77

Considering your limited training due to your injury that is an amazing performance. Very well done. Your diligence with cross training has really paid off.

From vinh on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 18:15:56 from 24.211.101.133

Great job Paul! Congrats!
