Ran this with my cousin JohnnyV.  Of course, Johnny said to meet him at the bus, so I waited at the Toxic Waste Center until they made me get on the last bus without JohnnyV.  Then, at the top of Big Mountain I walked around calling his name, no response.  Saw a few other bloggers, and finally the race was about to start.  Finally Johnny responds to one last call out from me, and says he's just been chilling on the mountain. Anyway, here we are at the start, we didn't get the same press coverage as Allie, who totally deserved it with her great win!!  (Don't you also just love how cheap Des News is that they use strideracing's generic finish line banner for the start?)

Well, it was great running with Johnny.  We were all lucky to have had shade as long as we did.  My splits are from my Garmin, which, despite trying to run good tangents was off by mile 2.  Anyway, here's the report.  I don't usually wear a heart rate monitor anymore, but was curious for this race.

John held pace really well through the half and even up mile 20.  To his credit, he totally sucked it up and didn't walk except of a bit of mile 26 (like I typically do) when goal pace has slipped by. At the end, one guy was trying to pass us and I insisted he not let that happen.  He busted out a good surge!

I'm happy to report my foot is fine.  I'll view this as excellent progress to a good fall!

Finally! Way to go. We all wanted to wait to cheer for you guys coming through but I had to get home to motherly duties so my husband won't divorce me for running too much:) Great job!

Nice job! I'm glad you found JohnnyV, wouldn't have been nearly as fun without a running partner I'm sure! I was great to finally meet you Thursday. I with Michelle wish I could've stayed, but family responsibilities took over :(

Glad to hear the foot is fine and I'm really impressed with the low HR the whole time (well, I'd consider it low!) Shows you're in great shape!!

From Jon on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 15:12:05 from 75.169.150.167

Nice job, Paul. So were you racing all out with JohnnyV, or were you just pacing him?

From RivertonPaul on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 15:15:18 from 75.169.33.125

Jon,

My trainings been poor as I've been nursing a foot injury, which seems to be healed now, so it was a pacing effort.

From DonGardinero on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 15:36:42 from 75.162.161.58

Great job, Paully!!! You and JohnnyV did great. I noticed the finish sign at the start of the Utah Valley Marathon, too.

From Smooth on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 15:37:02 from 71.36.86.207

It was so awesome to watch you and Johnny come in. It looked like a "walk in the park" for you. Just coming off a foot injury and a month post UVM, you are a hero in running this beast of a DNews, a very tough course to pace with the brutal downhill and grueling last 10K in the city heat. You're amazing!!!AWESOME pacing effort!!! Wish I had a cousin that talented and willing. It was good to meet your beautiful wife and children at the finish.

great job! glad to hear you finally found johnnyV, and even more glad to hear that your foot held up. that is great news. thanks so much for saying hi yesterday. this probably sounds dumb, but it meant a lot to hear a few words of encouragement when i was really feeling the pressure. thanks so much. hope to see you at TOU.

I might be arranging some longer runs on Saturdays for us South/West Valley folk. I am trying to get with Walter too. We would love to have you along, and any other of your buddies. I will try to do some 20 milers in August.

Paul, It was good to meet you even if it was brief. Had I been a smart guy I would have hung with you guys and toughed it with you. I ran this thing alone and it always helps to have someone to talk to and work through the tough spots. I need to run 3:35:59 for my BQ. You were right there had I been able to be tough.....well I really hadn't trained for this run decided the day before to run it. Thanks for saying hello on your way by.

Nice training pace effort! I am sure JohnnyV will be eternally grateful for your help running this marathon---we all know how much it means to have someone cheering us on and keeping our spirits up.

From Matt on Sat, Jul 25, 2009 at 21:50:22 from 71.36.81.45

Paul,

I am super impressed at how low your hear rate is at this pace especially the first half. I am really looking forward to reading about next time you feel up to pushing it. Way to go. That was great of you to support your cousin. I ended up doing the same the last 3.5 miles

From Teena on Sun, Jul 26, 2009 at 00:57:06 from 67.177.20.13

Incredible job on the race. So glad that you were finally able to hook up with JohnnyV and that your foot did well! Extremely GREAT news!!!

And ... can't believe your heart rate! WOW!!! Very impressive. :)

Congrats again. Smooth and I were screaming like mad women when you and JohnnyV came in.

You have an absolutely beautiful family!

Very nicely done!

Great job on you race!

From Rhett on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 14:28:36 from 74.36.34.147

Looks like you helped pull JohnnyV along and had a good long training run for yourself. I'm glad your foot is feeling better.
