Deseret New Marathon.

I entered this only Monday as prior to that, I was uncertain how my achilles would be in its recovery.  Thankfully, injury recovery has have been getting better so I thought I would run, despite less than ideal training, in large part to keep my streak of running DNews since 2003 alive.

I decided I would just go and see how things went, most importantly not pushing to any injury.

At the start, I held my hands up so I could notice myself in a photo.  It worked (see below).

 1
6:11  Headed out, just following behind Allie.
 2
5:58 12:10Just following Allie, pace was fine.
 3
6:03 18:14Still behind Allie, I'm using auto-splits which were behind a bit by this point.
 4
6:17 24:31Miles are going by fast.
 5
6:52 31:24Holing back a bit, knowing my training has been poor..
 6
 7:14 38:38uneventful
 7
8:12 46:50Did not labor too much on hills.
 8
7:39 54:30I think this is the split where the race crests Little Mountain.
 9
6:26 1:00:57I think this was about the most comfortable mile of the race for me.
 10
7:02 1:07:59Missed an aide station, as I dropped the power aide in the transition -- perhaps I should have stopped.
 11
6:47 1:14:46Still feeling alright, despite not much good training at pace.
 12
6:48 1:21:35Mentally feeling alright, but already not up to holding pace for sub 3:00.
 13
 6:50 1:28:25

Noted half (not Garmin but mile marker) around

Half in 1:29:40

 14
7:22 1:35:48Walked this aide station to try to get down more power aide.
 15
7:15 1:43:03I should have decided to run tough, but decided at this point to not press my luck for injury.
 16
8:03 1:51:06You can see I'm already taking it way too easy.
 17
 7:30
 1:58:36Letting people pass.
 18
8:39 2:07:16As I've been slowing dumb idea comes into my head to go ahead and walk this uphill on Foothill rationalizing a nice break and to safeguard the achilles
 19
7:39 2:14:56I never really get going again.
 20
 8:10 2:23:07Slacking big time
 21
 10:03 2:33:10Major walking break -- what was I doing?
 22
7:30 2:40:40I've got to learn to keep running even when it doesn't seem to matter.
 23
 9:48 2:50:29Embarrassing.
 24
9:12 2:59:41Keep justifying my laziness on don't get injured grounds.
 25

1:07  (6:24 pace)

All my resting made this part of the run very easy.  I had some left in the tank.

Overall, glad my achilles held up great.  Pleased no new injury.  First half was decent.  Terrible second, more mental looking back on it now.

Great to see some of the bloggers!

Good report and good run. I certainly wouldn't have pushed it any harder than you did, looks like you are setting up well for some great fall racing.

From Calvin on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 13:50:59 from 66.182.67.50

Pretty good time, despite mailing in some of the last few miles. Smart running - no aggravated injury - great job.

From Andy on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 14:20:09 from 198.60.114.178

Another one under the belt. I can't believe you ran this course while recovering from an injury. You are very persistent.

From allie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 14:21:58 from 174.23.226.74

great job paul. i am glad your achilles held up. it was nice seeing you at the start and fun to run those first few miles with you right there.

i appreciate your comment about the tangents. i was all over the place yesterday; very unfocused in the beginning. i think i was following the yellow lines on the road more than the tangents :)

great job once again. always nice seeing you at races.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 14:41:43 from 174.52.45.85

So so so glad that your achilles behaved so well. Sounds like all goals were met: 1. See how things would go in relation to training, injury, etc. 2. Keep your D-News streak alive.

A huge congrats!!!

Also, it was so much fun seeing you run through the finish. Yes, it definitely looked like you had plenty left in the tank.

Nicely done! :)

From Rhett on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 19:27:40 from 74.36.34.151

Paul, you made me laugh will all your comments about slacking and being embarrassed with your effort over the last half.... And you still BQ'd!!!! Do you realize how many people would kill to be able to BQ? You rock even when you are injured. I think you ran a very smart race, saving that super fast effort for a goal race.

You are going to come to Boston and run with us this year....Right?

From Tom Slick on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 19:42:43 from 172.190.94.49

Hey Paul, sounds like you ran this one just right.Kept the streak alive, didn't cause any new damage and BQ in the process. Not that you needed another BQ! Good on ya, good run.

From Mike Warren on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 21:00:40 from 74.211.9.222

Rhett makes a great point. You know your getting good when you mess around and still hit the BQ. Good solid training run, nice to have in the bank!

From Tom on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 10:44:34 from 137.65.56.16

Paul glad to see you survived the run and the injury is behaving. Still a respectable time despite the tough second half.

From Huans32 on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 12:12:10 from 138.64.8.52

Awesome job Paul. Man and so close to that sub 3:20 too. Was great seeing you running it. We were suprised to see you doing it. You looked strong at the end. And ran a smart race to not get injuried more. Awesome job again. And I can't wait to run with you again this Sat.

From DonGardinero on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 13:11:50 from 75.162.189.17

Wow Paul, a very good showing despite the lack of training. I would be full of jubilation if I could run a marathon that fast. Nice job keeping the streak alive.

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 19:30:44 from 71.35.225.230

nice job Paul, great to see the achilles holding up. now you need to run a marathon in the water to get the real payoff from all that water running...

From MarcE on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 00:54:39 from 204.16.82.120

Way to go, RP. It's a little sad, but to see you run "only" a 3:20 makes me feel a little better about my last race! Thanks, Paul! Seriously, great effort, I'll be following your lead on the Achilles recovery..as mine has been acting up a bit lately. Nice efrot.

From Lily on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 01:08:30 from 67.199.181.73

Cry me a river Riverton. Your marathon time is something most people hope for. :)

From Burt on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 03:11:45 from 68.225.214.248

I cannot BQ. Now I'm going to kill you.

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 14:11:38 from 174.23.218.43

Paul ~ U DA MAN!!! I'm with Teena...all goals met! You ran a very smart marathon. SO GLAD no new injury. DNews is such a gamble. WAY to master that beast...you own that course! I think everyone has a mental breakdown from Foothill Dr. on. I HATE that last part of the course,,,so boring, hot and tedious.

It was so fun watching you run to the finish...so fast and strong...nice to have some left in the tank. PCM will be a piece of cake for you!

From Smooth on Tue, Jul 27, 2010 at 14:13:46 from 174.23.218.43

Is that start picture from the newspaper website? The guy with glasses and blue shorts, front and center, is my bro-in-law!

From Rossy on Sat, Jul 31, 2010 at 00:08:53 from 151.151.16.20

Paul, love the write up and great job on the race (i.e., a very respectable time)!

From Mark on Sun, Aug 01, 2010 at 11:54:30 from 173.168.88.68

Great job Paul, still a BQ even while running on an injury. Very nice first half! Smart to not re-injure.
