I made public the fact that I might as well go for a pr.  Looking back, I thought I was realistically in about 2:54 shape (but thought I would go for sub 2:50), and going out too fast given my training cost me.  Oh, well.  No guts, no glory.

Before the race it was actually warm -- almost hot, at the start.  I actually had to shed some of my clothing.  Not a good sign.

Was great to see so many friends!

 1
6:12  Running behind Rich and AmberG.
 2
6:23 12:36Nothing much happening.
 3
6:09 18:45Running just behind the women leaders.
 4
6:04 24:49Not the tailwinds I was hoping for.
 5
 6:11 31:00I love downhill.
 6
5:55 36:56Fun running with the womens leaders and the police escort.  I was hoping for more press coverage while I was hanging with them.  :)
 7
5:58 42:54I am ahead of last years pace.
 8
7:16 50:11I back off the pace on Veyo.
 9
 6:57 57:09Conserving a bit uphill.
 10
 6:54 1:04:03Still chugging along.
 11
7:07 1:11:10Last year this felt better.
 12
6:56 1:18:07Still good, but notice the heat.
 13
 6:49 1:24:56

Noted half (Garmin) around

Half in 1:25:xx

Took a Gu here, only time I walked to make sure I got fluids down with it.  Dang, I was doing so well.

 14
7:20 1:32:16I was trying to conserve a bit.
 15
6:25 1:36:42Training this year just not quite enough.
 16
6:26 1:45:09I just couldn't open it up like I wanted to.
 17
 6:57
1:52:07Mentally I am losing it here.
 18
7:03 1:59:11Just couldn't get going mentally or physically.
 19
7:53 2:07:04This was almost like walking.  I had really hit cruise control, not wanting to completely blow up.  Andy passed  me here. (Along with a bunch of others)
 20
7:10 2:14:15Still slacking big time, but haven't resorted to walking.  Some others have blown up by this point, at least I haven't.
 21
 6:342:20:49
More effort than I would have liked, but not enough to really get a good mile split.
 22
7:13 2:28:02I just can't force myself to push, even with just over 4 to go.
 23
7:00 2:35:03Again, more difficult that it should be.  I think here I run up to Andy.
 24
 6:51 2:41:54Just keep moving.
 25
6:55 2:48:50For some time I have accepted just getting sub 3:00.
 26
7:14 2:56:04Don't know why I'm tanking it so much here.
26.2 (.26 garmin)

1:36  (6:12 pace)
2:57:40Finish reasonably strong.

It was hot.  Maybe I'll  learn to go for more a realistic time and not suffer to a slower time (but I doubt it).

On a side note, I thought I ran great tangents (which is what I'm doing in the photo below).  I'm always amazed that people don't look far ahead to the horizon on races like St. George to plot better tangents.

Congrats to those who met their goals.

Again, great to see so many friends!

Oh well, wasn't my day.

That's right, no guts, no glory! Wow, it's amazing to see how you were already suffering in miles 14-19. If mile 26 was faster than 14, that's gotta be good, right?

From Rob on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 14:27:59 from 166.205.11.190

I think that's a pretty dang good time, no shame in that. The heat would have killed me. Contests.

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 15:24:33 from 67.41.176.32

Nice job Paul, considering the heat and all, and all those deathly elliptical miles you did to prepare! no guts no glory, thats my philosophy too! enjoy your break, maybe I can run with you in SG next year if I can get in.

From DonGardinero on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 15:49:04 from 67.128.137.250

Still very impressive considering how hot it was today. Nicely done!!!

From jtshad on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 16:50:43 from 208.117.127.110

It was great to meet you in person. Today was a rough day, way to run hard and hang on for a near PR in tough conditions.

Nice race!

From Cody on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 16:51:11 from 174.52.244.185

Not too shabby given the heat. Your slow down was pretty average for the day from what I have read. Your first half looked pretty good. I think you made the right choice to go for it.

From Jon on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 16:59:22 from 74.177.99.190

Go big or go home, right Paul? You ran tough and should be proud. Nice work on a hot day.

From fly on the Wall on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 17:23:11 from 166.70.192.189

"For some time I have accepted just getting sub 3:00." That ain't so bad!

Not a PR but it sounds like you had fun chasing skirt for a few miles. :)

Congrats.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 18:46:56 from 24.10.248.6

Sounds like a tough day for a lot of people Paul. 80 degrees is no good for the marathon.

I think you are right to consider this a fine effort. Enjoy some down time!

From JimF on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 18:48:42 from 68.46.211.156

Great job considering the conditions! Always nice to be under 3:00.

From fly on the Wall on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 19:29:07 from 166.70.192.189

I've read more reports and it sounds like a brutal day!! You kick arse!

From RAD on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 19:36:24 from 74.211.5.149

Nice work Paul! It was horribly hot today, you did a great job in the face of all the heat. I was too slow, had to stop for water SO many times in the heat. VERY impressive race!! Good to see you at the first.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 20:22:55 from 74.211.26.22

You ROCK!!!!

That is an awesome time. Seriously, I think a 2:57 this year beats a 2:51 last year. IT WAS HOT!!!!!

From allie on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 21:49:41 from 174.19.51.35

great job, paul. it looks like the roughest patch was mile 19, but you bounced back. i think that says a lot about your fitness -- it is definitely there, but it was just a hard day. you managed a strong finish and never truly bonked. there are a lot of things for you to be proud of from your race today. you put in a solid effort in tough conditions. way to go.

From Walter on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 21:50:24 from 24.10.169.110

Paul, you didnt lose too much time on your splits at the end. Keep up the good work! It was a scorcher out!

From MarcE on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 21:55:00 from 204.16.82.120

Way to go RP. Sub 3:00...again!! Looked like a great race in my book. Congrats!

From Mike Warren on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 22:09:33 from 74.211.9.222

Paul, great to see you today. Still a great time with the conditions. You were not in the shape you wanted and still pulled it out. Your becoming a marathon expert!

From Bec on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 22:23:57 from 74.211.6.66

Great race! Way to break three!

From artichoke on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 23:31:55 from 208.65.1.186

A fantastic effort on a hot day! Way to go.

From James on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 11:34:45 from 174.27.227.112

Still a good race for you Paul!

From Huans32 on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 12:41:01 from 98.202.0.57

Great job running so well in that heat. You did awesome on your recovery and also getting in the heat.

From JD on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 14:04:13 from 166.128.32.202

Nice job, strong performance RP!

From Tom on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 14:39:04 from 74.211.9.52

Super race Paul, I'm amazed what you've been able to do this year with the mix of lower miles and crosstraining. So what about the crash and burn the last part of the race, you were cruising that first half and that heat was relentless. Great job I think. Once again congratulations!

From baldnspicy on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 15:10:56 from 72.77.68.219

Very inspirational considering your comeback from injury. Great job. I'll bet that yogurt tasted great. It didn't sit out in the heat for those 2.5 hrs did it? lol

From Kelli on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 21:22:23 from 71.219.65.246

Agreed, an all fronts! It has been interesting reading race reports, it seems we all struggled with the same parts of the race no matter how fast or slow we were! You did great, you suffered through it, and it is OVER thank goodness, right?

From Lily on Sun, Oct 03, 2010 at 22:45:35 from 67.199.181.73

Weeeeel, I think your time is great. Nice work Paul.

From Scott Wesemann on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 01:04:16 from 75.165.249.90

That is an impressive time for that race. I can't even imagine doing what you did. Nice work.

From Calvin on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 10:22:09 from 66.133.117.3

Another sub-3 in that heat shows that last year wasn't a fluke. Faster at the half this year than last. Sometimes you have to just go for it right? Another strong marathon time for you. Way to go!

From JamesH on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 12:44:52 from 74.211.22.194

Nicely done Paul. Keep on trucking man!

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 13:48:06 from 67.42.27.114

Thanks, all, for the nice comments.

From Dustin on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 14:04:02 from 204.113.48.131

Nice job on the marathon, especially considering the heat. I wish I could have hung with you longer. I hope to rebound soon from this disappointing year.

From TBean on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 16:17:37 from 63.241.173.64

Great race. You had some pretty fast miles mixed in there. That darn heat got to most of us.

From Calvin on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 17:27:25 from 66.133.117.3

that's an interesting photo of you on Veyo. where did you find that?

From Burt on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 17:56:52 from 206.19.214.144

Great job Paul. I love the pics.

From JulieC on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:02:33 from 70.56.111.1

seriously FIT. Someday....LOVE YOUR PACE. So glad you really didn't tank, you turned it around. Yes compared to last year this was mighty tough but hey I think all you speedies didn't even see the sun right? Okay at least not for long. My visor never even blocked its rays coming in horizontal as it rose. GREAT RUN : D

From timp on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:18:41 from 136.182.2.26

forgot to comment on Sunday - great race in those conditions!

From Smooth on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 19:30:50 from 67.41.235.104

You are so DANG SPEEDY!!! GREAT race and impressive mental toughness!!! 2:57 this year is HUGE!!! You're AWESOME!!! Oh, love love love the pics!

From Tom Slick on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 20:37:02 from 69.171.160.75

2:57:xx, Paul, you are an amazing runner!

From baldnspicy on Mon, Oct 04, 2010 at 22:37:14 from 72.77.68.219

Dang, that's a sweet downhill right there! Who needs tangents when you can just trip and roll for a mile? :-)

From Burt on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 01:37:40 from 68.225.214.248

I'm noticing a slight pattern on the Hot Discussion Board. Wait. Is Kelli going to see this comment. She thinks I'm the Comment Police.

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 10:02:36 from 71.219.65.246

I think nothing---I KNOW!

From Bill on Tue, Oct 05, 2010 at 12:31:05 from 168.179.180.160

Nice race Paul. going out that fast may not be a bad idea while it wass cool.

From Matt on Sat, Oct 09, 2010 at 18:48:45 from 98.202.72.183

Paul, Great race. I think you could easily handicap your time 3 minutes based of the heat. If we had last years perfect weather maybe 4. I hope to see you around soon.

From richborget on Sat, Oct 09, 2010 at 23:49:07 from 71.199.13.128

Great Job Paul. I had my worst run in 3 years. I hope I can come back and be as strong as you again.

From Rhett on Mon, Oct 11, 2010 at 16:20:20 from 184.10.154.226

Paul, I peaked last week to see how you did, but am just getting to reading everyone's reports. Congrats on easily getting under 3. From everyone's reports I gather the heat was a big factor and you still ran a fast race. I'm sure you still have a 2:50 in you and I'm hoping I do. I'm starting my training today to do it at UVM 2011. I'll see you there at the finish in 2:50.
