I notice you change up your incline alot. Are you doing a set program that progresses or are you just changing it up randomly? Great job btw.

The treadmills I use at the gym have a random incline program so it changes the incline on its own. All I have to do is basically decide how steep it goes. Right now I use it not so much for uphill training, but just to simulate something that is not pancake flat. Before St. George, I try to do some extended uphills to simulate Veyo.

Yeah its a must to train for Veyo and also all the downhills. If I run on a treadmill lately I just do the 1% incline and run with that. And just play with the speed. Next question is do you feel any change now really with the hills now?? As in you feel able easily attack any hill and it doesnt mess with you paces much??

Mark, running on the random incline mostly helps me mentally to not wuss out as much on the hills. As you know, I love to train and run on the downhills, and unless I do some incline work even the slightest little hill seems a challenge. Talking about this with you is making me think I need to do some Ogden simulation training, where I throw in a sustained uphill to simulate the course around mile 14.5.

Yeah that is just what I am thinking too. I have noticed when I ran more on the treadmill that I just didnt get enough uphill or downhill training. And wondered last year how much of my cramping up at mile 17-18 was due to not doing as much up hill training. Since there is that steep yet short uphill at 14.5 and then keeps going up a bit till like when I cramped around where you can see the dam. So again with the random uphills do you feel like hills arent really a problem for you?? I am asking I guess to see if you feel running shorter hills or a longer uphill works better for you. As to which will be more benifical.

My best preparation for uphills was prior to St. George last year. I really tried to simulate the extended uphill for Veyo and the miles thereafter, so I think extended uphill with a few short spurts of extra steep grades has worked best for me.
