I recall a video on your blog of a TMer crashin' and burnin'. Well.... look for me on You Tube at Lehi Rec center...I went down hard totally spacin' that I left the TM running after a SW session. I can't believe how much a TM can beat you up!! And just when I thought it was safer to run indoors.

Can't post details from my smartphone except in comments.

Finally broke down and ran the last two days as the pull of Maui was too much, despite the achilles tendon.

In Maui, along the shore. Beautiful lovely morning. (Would have kept going but had to go to the conference I am here for.)

I was going to ask if you were back from Hawaii. I guess that answered my question. I have talked to Sasha about getting an iPhone App for FRB. I should start pushing it again cause I have that problem all the time. What kind of phone do you have?

I've been a poor blogger, I know.  It is difficult to blog when injured.  Update:

Last Wednesday I visited with Dr. Joseph Albano, who specializes in tendon injuries.  He confirmed that I do have achilles tendonosis and showed me a bunch of the interstitial tears on ultrasound.  Previously I believed I was not at risk for rupture, but he informed me taht my condition has progressed to the point where I am at risk for rupture so I have to avoid some of my activities.  Bummer.  He also confirmed that he believes my best treatment option is to inject platelet-rich plasma (PRP) along with some of my own fat (rich in stem cells) into the achilles guided by ultrasound. Although there exists a bunch of positive research and experience to support the use of PRP injections to treat achilles tendonisis, unfortunately with regard to the achilles, insurance companies still deem it "experimental" and my insurance carrier will not cover the procedure.  Nevertheless, I am going to go ahead and have it done.  The downside (apart from the fact it is supposed to be very painful), I will have to do lots of cross training, and have to undergo another 1 or two injections.  So, despite having already registered, I'm out of Ogden and Utah Valley and the Slam.  I'll have to see how recovery is going to see if I can sneak in a fall marathon.

Warning, boring but general informational video:

So sorry to hear about the latest news of tears and risk of rupture :( We're all thinking of you.

I will be more religious about the eccentric lifts. Thank you for the advice. Anything else? Just so I know what to watch for, did you just run with it inflamed for several months? I just wonder if I'm past the point of no return. I have my first PT apt today.

From RAD on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 14:41:01 from 67.172.229.125

Well shoot! It's never fun to get bad news, I guess the upside is that you got the bad news before the horrible news. A rupture would be so much worse, maybe not financially (I'm sure the insurance would cover that), but recovery wise. Hang in there, x-training is already under your belt. Now you just have to find a way to enjoy elliptical h#$$!!!

Friday I had my PRP and fat injected into my achilles tendon.  First, blood was drawn then goes though a process of centrifugation designed to separate PRP from low-platelet plasma and red blood cells.  Then, a local anesthesia was administered to my back above my left hip from which the Dr. Albano harvested fat graft material while observing on ultrasound by scraping it from by back, the donor site was closed, and the fat graft material was processed to be injection along with the PRP into my left achilles tendon. The harvesting of the fat material was more uncomfortable than painful -- definitely a strange sensation.  Dr. Albano then uses ultrasound to inject the PRP and fat back into my achilles.  I opted not to look at the gigantic needle, but did watch on the ultrasound on a monitor as he explained to me what was going on.  I was relieved that the local anesthesia was very effective in limiting the pain for this part of the procedure.  During the process Dr. Albano identified to me a number of interstial tears and he is hopeful the procedure will be successful.

I went home quite happy.  Of course, when the local anesthesia wore off during the night and once my body began responding to the procedure, the pain intensified.  Saturday and Sunday was very painful.  The pain has subsided, but my range of motion in my left leg is very very limited, which makes me quite immobile.  (I honestly did not expect to have such decreased mobility.)   My leg has a ton of inflammation, but that is what will prompt the healing.

The black area on the image shows one of the interstitial tears.

Monday evening swelling.

Now, let the healing begin.  (First course of action, being able to walk.)

So, I still have very limited flexibility in my achilles tendon -- so much so that I can't yet walk normally.  I am working on stretching the achilles, but for the time being progress is slow.

I did have a follow-up visit with Dr. Albano, and everything seems to be going as planned.  Unfortunately, my interstitial tears were significant enough that I will need another injection.  I am scheduled tentatively to have another PRP/Fat injection on April 1.  Exciting I know.

In the mean time I wear my Dynasplint dorsiflexion splint at night, and during the day when I have time.  It is tension loaded, and I am steadily working on increasing the tension.  Here are some shots of me wearing my splint at work.

Enjoy some of the aquatoning (hahaha) while you're down - you'll be back and kickin' it soon, and better off for the long run too! (no pun intended) What are some of your favorite classes? I don't care if it was, 2.5 hours or 2 1/2 hours or 150 minutes on an elliptical, that sounds crazy. That's practically a full marathon. Nice job.

150 minutes on the elliptical!!!!!!!!!???????!!!!!!!!!

DANG!!!!!

You sure haven't let your achilles affect your endurance at all!!!

Seriously ... 150 minutes????????

(I don't know ... I think I should add a few more exclamation points and question marks.)

My recovery from my second fat/PRP injection series into my achilles seems to be more accelerated compared to my recovery after the January injections, but there is still a lot of recovery to come.

I thought I'd post some of the images from Burt's modeling jobs:

Recognizing Burt's Devilish appeal, ad executives couldn't help but cast Burt as an eligible young man:

burt sandwich

Soon, it became apparent that Burt projected the fine balance between innate machismo and compassion, as ad executives demonstrated in this shoot.

Burt beer

Unfortunately, despite looking so sharp in a sweater, Burt's modeling career fell off the cliff after Burt (having been told he was simply posing for a Ricola advertisement) was exploited by some unscrupulous sexist ad executives who were secretly taking advantage of young Burt's rugged masculinity.

(Come on, how hard is to see that there is no paper on the roll? Or do they see it and are just too lazy to get it themselves? Or have they put off going potty for so long that they don't have the extra second to spare to grab it? Who knows!!!)

The interstitial tears in my Achilles tendon seem to be healing, but it is a slow process and takes a fair amount of time.  I went in to the doctor again just this last Friday and we could see on ultrasound imaging that the tears are getting smaller, but I still have a bunch and still need a bunch of the stem cells from the injected fat to turn into new tendon.  The goal is to get me as close to normal as possible so I can return to running.  I am scheduled for my third injection series in August (Hopefully my last -- although I keep saying that).  I had already written off this entire year.  Hopefully I will be back at it next year.

Well Bro RPaul, what have you got going? Are you doing any marathons, or other runs, between now and St. George?

Are you doing Ogden this weekend?

Nice job on the machines and easing back into things. Now that I can run early outside I haven't been around to see you much in the mornings. Hope all is well.

I'm not a big country fans, but I thought this year that these two on Idol (and others) were terrific.

Also, it seems past time for some sort of lunch get together.  Any takers?

I'm not going to lie, I have a girl-crush on Carrie Underwood. She has the whole package...smart, stable, talented, GORGEOUS.

I'm up for lunch! Now to get all of our schedules to match up...that's the tricky part. I think Teena has Mondays and Fridays off, not sure though.

Hey Paul, I tried to talk to you today but you were ignoring me.

You've been hittin that barbell class pretty hard, It looks like way to much work for me.

From RivertonPaul on Thu, May 26, 2011 at 13:03:58 from 67.42.27.114

Brooke,

Who is Teena? :)

Rob,

I was ignoring right up until I tried hand signaling you into the room at which point you ignored me. I am curious as to how your Dr. appointment went.

From RobXT on Thu, May 26, 2011 at 13:07:59 from 206.71.84.68

I broke my blog, I wrote up a big summary of the doctor and then I tried to add a new blog to track my crosstraining and now both are broken.

I have a stress fracture in my hip, I've been told to stop running completely for 8 - 10 weeks.

I want to crash the lunch party! Especially since I've missed the last couple due to kid complications.

Oh, and as far as Idol goes Casey didn't win and that just makes me sad! After Paul got voted off, I was holding out hope for Casey. When Casey got the boot it was Haley...nothin' I got nothin' this year :( I LOVED Casey's performance with Jack Black. I just have a completely platonic crush on Casey - the guy can SING! I want to go to one of his concerts and get back stage passes to meet him. I already told my husband this is my next big gift (when he starts touring alone). I love Casey! He may look like Papa Smurf, but I LOVE his voice and stage presence. You can just tell he's the funny guy of the group. Oh, sorry...you started it though by mentioning Idol.

From RAD on Wed, Jun 01, 2011 at 14:52:21 from 98.202.17.113

Sounds perfect! I can then head down to Provo for packet pick-up afterward.

Congrats to your son!

Rhett, it is about 40 min north of the main Provo area. Not clear up to SLC downtown, but still North. Not a bad drive (as long as construction on the freeway near Provo is cooperating).

Kelli, yes, the graduation was very nice, but very long. I wish the audio visual had been synced and that the video did not convert the purple to blue. You'd think UVU could do a better job at that. Also, unfortunately, we had some people sitting behind us who didn't know how to whisper.

Tuesday my dad passed away.

Many of you know over the past number of years my dad has been dealing with serious health issues including a number of hospitalizations.  The past four weeks has been especially eventful.  His death came at the end of an intense month of worry and pain. The last three years have been difficult and rewarding, as I witnessed my dad's sanctification through his trials. He softened. He learned patience. He turned to the needful and important.

My sympathies to you Paul! I wish I had some wonderful words of wisdom, but at a time like this there are few, if any, that express the right sentiments.

As I watched my father pass, many experiences touched me and changed my life. It is absolutely amazing, terrifying and spiritual. I'm glad you can see so much of what he went through as a positive. Always remember him and he will never be far from you, but I think you already know this.

My prayers, love and sympathy go to you and your family at this time.

So sorry for your loss Paul. You have my sympathy. My father passed quickly and unexpectedly, which meant little suffering but no goodbyes. There is no easy way to loose your father.
